String of Bananas – A Fast-Growing Trailing Succulent Full of Character
String of Bananas (Senecio radicans) is a popular trailing succulent loved for its long cascading vines covered in small, curved leaves that resemble tiny bananas. Its fresh green foliage and fast-growing habit make it one of the best hanging succulents for adding softness and movement to indoor spaces, balconies, patios, and sheltered outdoor areas.
Native to South Africa, this easy-care succulent quickly develops long trailing stems that spill beautifully over hanging baskets, shelves, plant stands, and decorative pots. It is closely related to String of Pearls but is generally considered easier to grow, faster growing, and more forgiving, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced succulent collectors.
During the growing season, mature plants may produce small white flowers with a light cinnamon fragrance. While the flowers are a pleasant bonus, the cascading foliage remains the main attraction throughout the year.
Whether displayed on its own or paired with other trailing succulents such as String of Pearls, String of Dolphins, Rhipsalis, or Burro's Tail, String of Bananas brings texture, colour, and a relaxed natural look to any plant collection.

Care Guide
Light
Grows best in bright, indirect light with a few hours of gentle morning sun. Too little light can cause stretched growth, while intense afternoon sun may scorch the leaves.
Watering
Water thoroughly only after the soil has dried out completely. Like most succulents, it is much more tolerant of dry conditions than constantly wet soil.
Soil
Use a free-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Good drainage helps prevent root rot and keeps the roots healthy.
Temperature
Prefers warm conditions and should be protected from frost and prolonged cold weather.
Feeding
Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertiliser to encourage healthy growth.

Good to Know
String of Bananas is one of the easiest trailing succulents to grow, making it an excellent alternative to String of Pearls for anyone new to succulents. Its vigorous growth allows it to quickly fill hanging baskets and create long cascading stems with very little maintenance.
This succulent stores water inside its fleshy leaves, allowing it to tolerate dry periods with ease. Healthy plants can grow surprisingly quickly in bright conditions and are simple to propagate by rooting stem cuttings, making it easy to grow your collection or share with friends.
