Sempervivum tectorum, also known as the Common Houseleek, is a classic rosette-forming succulent prized for its hardiness, symmetry, and charming alpine appeal. Native to the mountains of Europe, this cold-tolerant succulent features fleshy, pointed green to reddish leaves arranged in tight rosettes, often producing offsets or “chicks” around the mother plant — hence the popular name “Hens and Chicks.”
Known for thriving in tough conditions, Sempervivum tectorum is ideal for rock gardens, pots, walls, and drought-tolerant landscapes. In summer, mature rosettes may send up tall flower stalks topped with star-shaped pink or red blooms before naturally completing their lifecycle.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers full sun for best color and compact growth.
-
Water: Very drought-tolerant. Water sparingly and only when soil is completely dry.
-
Soil: Requires well-draining, gritty soil.
-
Temperature: Extremely cold-hardy; tolerates frost and snow.
-
Growth Habit: Spreads slowly via offsets; great for groundcover or container arrangements.
Sempervivum tectorum is a timeless and dependable succulent, perfect for both beginner gardeners and alpine plant lovers seeking low-maintenance beauty year-round.
