Sempervivum, commonly referred to as Houseleeks or Hens and Chicks, is a genus of hardy and captivating succulents native to mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. These evergreen perennials are renowned for their rosette-forming habit, resilience, and ability to thrive in challenging conditions.

Appearance:

  • Rosettes: Sempervivum features fleshy, pointed leaves arranged in tight, symmetrical rosettes. These rosettes resemble flowers, adding a touch of elegance to rocky landscapes or container gardens.

  • Colors: The leaves showcase a range of colors, including various shades of green, red, purple, and even bronze, particularly when exposed to ample sunlight or cool temperatures.

  • Offsets (Chicks): These plants are known for their prolific production of offsets, or "chicks," which cluster around the "hen" (the main rosette), creating a charming and visually appealing display.

  • Flowers: In the summer, mature rosettes produce tall, flowering stalks adorned with clusters of star-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, or purple.

Growth Habits and Care:

  • Sunlight: Sempervivum thrives in full sun to partial shade.

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Remarkably, they can even grow in rocky or gravelly soil, showcasing their adaptability.

  • Watering: Once established, they are incredibly drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering.

Additional Information:

  • Sempervivum symbolizes resilience and longevity. Its name is derived from the Latin words "semper" (always) and "vivum" (living), reflecting its ability to endure harsh conditions.

  • These succulents are a popular choice for rock gardens, green roofs, and containers, thanks to their low-maintenance nature and ability to thrive in challenging environments.

This Plant comes in a 130mm diameter container and the plant you see is the plant you get. The plant will be shipped bare rooted.
