Introduce a touch of the bizarrely beautiful to your plant collection with Rhipsalis paradoxa, commonly known as the Chain Cactus. This fascinating epiphytic cactus features unique, flattened, segmented stems that link together in a distinctive, often zigzagging pattern, resembling a chain. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, its intriguing structure and easy-going nature make it a captivating and low-maintenance addition to any indoor space.
Key Characteristics:
-
Unique "Chained" Stems: The most striking feature is its flattened, green stems that are divided into distinct segments, giving the appearance of interconnected links in a chain. This unusual growth habit is what makes it so highly sought after.
-
Epiphytic Nature: In its natural habitat, it grows on trees, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and decaying organic matter. This epiphytic nature makes it well-suited for hanging baskets or mounted displays.
-
Trailing Growth Habit: Its stems cascade downwards, making it an excellent choice for hanging planters where its unique structure can be fully appreciated. It can reach impressive lengths over time.
-
Small White Flowers: Mature plants may produce small, delicate, white or greenish-white flowers along the edges of the stems, typically in spring or summer. These can sometimes be followed by small, berry-like fruits.
-
Low Maintenance: Compared to many other houseplants, Rhipsalis paradoxa is relatively easy to care for, thriving on neglect rather than constant attention.
-
Air Purifier: Like many indoor plants, it can contribute to improving indoor air quality.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, which can scorch the delicate stems. An east or west-facing window with filtered light is ideal. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may not grow as vigorously.
- Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering again. Reduce watering significantly in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant. Overwatering is a common cause of problems and can lead to root rot.
The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 130mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
