Rhipsalis ‘Licorice’ – Striking Trailing Cactus with Deep, Dark Elegance

Elevate your indoor jungle with the dramatic beauty of Rhipsalis ‘Licorice’, also known as the Licorice Mistletoe Cactus. This stunning epiphytic cactus captivates with its slender, trailing stems in rich shades of deep green to nearly black, evoking the look of glossy licorice strands.

Native to the lush, humid rainforests of Central and South America, ‘Licorice’ thrives in bright, indirect light and brings a graceful, cascading form to hanging baskets, shelves, or window displays. Its unique color and texture make it a standout in any succulent or tropical plant collection.

Key Characteristics:

  • Stems: Thin, cylindrical, and trailing; may become purplish or dark bronze under strong light.

  • Color: Deep green to nearly black, with a glossy finish that enhances its dramatic look.

  • Growth Habit: Cascading and branching; ideal for hanging planters.

  • Size: Stems can trail up to 60 cm (2 feet) or more in ideal conditions.

  • Flowers: Small, white to pale yellow flowers appear sporadically and may be followed by tiny white berries.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Tolerates some morning sun but avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch stems.

  • Water: Keep soil lightly moist during the growing season, allowing the top layer to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.

  • Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity; mist occasionally or place near a humidity tray indoors.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining mix such as orchid bark combined with cactus soil or peat-based mix.

  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 15–26°C (59–78°F). Protect from frost.

  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted liquid cactus or orchid fertilizer.

  • Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings; allow cut ends to callous before planting in moist soil.
