Opuntia ficus-indica, also known as Indian Fig Cactus or Indian Fig Prickly Pear, is a hardy and attractive cactus known for its large, flat paddle-shaped stems and excellent drought tolerance. In the warmer months, this iconic cactus can produce yellow to orange flowers, followed by edible prickly pear fruits.

Well suited to many warm, dry Australian gardens, Indian Fig Opuntia, also known as Prickly Pear Cactus, is valued as both an ornamental cactus and a useful culinary plant. Its bold shape makes it a great choice for xeriscaping, coastal gardens, large pots, feature planting, hedging, and low-maintenance outdoor spaces.

Care Instructions:

Light: Prefers full sun for strong growth, healthy pads, and better flowering.

Watering: Very drought-tolerant. Water deeply but only when the soil has dried out completely.

Soil: Best grown in sandy, free-draining soil. Avoid heavy soil or wet conditions around the roots.

Temperature: Suited to warm climates. Protect from prolonged frost, heavy rain, or very cold conditions.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a cactus or succulent fertilizer during the growing season, mainly from spring to early summer.

Maintenance: Requires minimal care. Prune when needed to control size or shape. Always wear gloves when handling, as the pads may contain fine glochids that can irritate the skin.
