Mangave ‘Purple People Eater’ | Deep Purple Feature Succulent
If you are looking for a succulent with strong colour and a bold shape, Mangave ‘Purple People Eater’ is an excellent choice. This striking hybrid develops a broad rosette of fleshy leaves that can take on rich purple, burgundy, and dark charcoal tones when grown in good light.
Dark markings across the foliage add extra texture, while the architectural shape makes this Mangave particularly effective as a feature plant. It works just as well in a decorative pot as it does in a dry garden or succulent collection.
What Makes ‘Purple People Eater’ Special?
The colour is one of its biggest attractions. As light levels change, the foliage can develop deeper purple and burgundy tones, while darker spots provide contrast across the leaves.
Its relatively fast growth compared with many Agaves also makes it an interesting choice for gardeners who want a larger feature plant without waiting many years.

- Deep purple, burgundy and smoky foliage
- Dark spotting across the leaves
- Broad, architectural rosette
- Strong colour develops with good light

- Works well in modern and dry garden designs
Growing Mangave ‘Purple People Eater’
Sun & Position
Place the plant in a bright, sunny position. Good light helps maintain its compact shape and can bring out stronger purple colouring.
When moving a plant from a sheltered position into stronger sunlight, gradually increase its exposure.
Watering
Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings.
During hot, active growth, water thoroughly when needed, then allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during cooler or wetter periods.
Soil
A free-draining cactus or succulent mix is recommended.
If planting directly into the garden, choose a position with good drainage. Avoid areas where water tends to collect after rain.
Great for Australian Gardens
With its strong colour and drought tolerance, ‘Purple People Eater’ can suit many warm Australian garden settings.
Use it as:
- A feature plant in a decorative pot
- A focal point in a rockery
- Part of a mixed succulent garden
- A centrepiece for a dry garden
- A statement plant on a sunny patio
- A contrasting plant among silver and blue succulents
Its dark foliage looks particularly effective beside lighter-coloured Echeveria and other blue or silver succulents.
