Kalanchoe humilis, often called "Desert Surprise" or "Felt Bush," is a distinctive succulent known for its striking foliage. This relatively easy-to-care-for plant adds a touch of the exotic to any indoor or outdoor succulent collection.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: The most notable feature of Kalanchoe humilis is its thick, fleshy leaves. They are typically oval-shaped and have a grey-green base color, strikingly marked with maroon to reddish-purple spots or stripes. The patterns on the leaves give it a unique, almost animalistic appearance, resembling tiger stripes.

  • Growth Habit: Kalanchoe humilis is a succulent shrub that grows upright and can reach up to 12 inches (30 cm) in height. It develops a rosette-like arrangement of leaves.

  • Flowers: While the foliage is the main attraction, this Kalanchoe can produce small, usually purple flowers on a tall stalk. However, flowering is not very common, especially when grown as an indoor plant.

  • Texture: The leaves have a slightly fuzzy or felt-like texture, adding to its unique appeal.

Care Tips

  • Light: Kalanchoe humilis thrives in bright light. It prefers full sun to partial shade. When grown indoors, place it near a sunny window where it can receive several hours of direct sunlight. The colors on the leaves become more vibrant with increased light exposure.

  • Watering: Like most succulents, Kalanchoe humilis is drought-tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's crucial to err on the side of underwatering. Water sparingly during the winter months when the plant is dormant.

  • Soil: Plant in well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. This type of soil allows excess water to drain away from the roots, preventing rot.

  • Temperature: Kalanchoe humilis prefers warm temperatures and is not frost-hardy. It can tolerate temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C) for short periods, but it's best to protect it from freezing temperatures.

  • Humidity: This succulent prefers low humidity levels. Average indoor humidity is generally sufficient.

  • Fertilizing: Kalanchoe humilis is not a heavy feeder. Fertilize sparingly, about once every 2-3 months during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer formulated for succulents. Avoid fertilizing during the winter.

  • Propagation: Kalanchoe humilis is easily propagated from stem or leaf cuttings. Allow the cuttings to dry and callus over for a few days before planting them in well-draining soil.
