Frithia Window

Frithia pulchra, commonly known as the Frithia Window or Fairy Elephant’s Foot, is a small, slow-growing succulent native to South Africa. It is well-known for its unique “windowed” leaves—fleshy, cylindrical leaves with translucent, flat tips that allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the plant’s tissues for photosynthesis. The plant grows mostly underground with only the leaf tips visible, making it an intriguing and unusual addition to any succulent collection.

In spring and summer, Frithia pulchra produces delicate, pink to magenta daisy-like flowers that add charm to its subtle appearance.

Main Characteristics:

• Small, cylindrical leaves with translucent “windows” at the tips

• Leaves grow mostly underground, exposing only the leaf tops

• Compact growth habit, usually reaching up to 5–7 cm tall

• Produces bright pink to magenta flowers in the growing season

• Adapted to arid environments with minimal water needs

Care Instructions:

• Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial sun. Avoid intense direct sunlight that can scorch the leaves

• Water: Water sparingly and only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering can cause root rot

• Soil: Use very well-draining, gritty soil; a cactus or succulent mix with added sand or perlite works well

• Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, ideally above 10°C; protect from frost

• Maintenance: Minimal; keep soil dry in winter and avoid watering during dormancy

• Propagation: Can be propagated from leaf cuttings or offsets, though growth is slow
