Introducing the fascinating and sculptural Euphorbia tortirama, a truly unique succulent prized for its spiraling, coral-like stems. This captivating plant from Madagascar features cylindrical, grey-green stems that twist and turn in an intriguing corkscrew pattern, creating a mesmerizing and architectural form. Its distinctive appearance makes it a highly sought-after addition to any collection of unusual succulents and cacti. Unlike true cacti, Euphorbias produce a milky sap (latex) when damaged.
Characteristics:
-
Spiraling Stems: The most striking feature is its grey-green, cylindrical stems that exhibit a pronounced spiraling or twisting growth pattern, resembling coral branches or miniature tornadoes.
- Tuberous Base (Caudex): Often develops a thickened, tuberous base (caudex) at ground level, which stores water and adds to its unique appearance. This caudex can become more prominent with age.
- Small Leaves (Ephemeral): Produces small, inconspicuous leaves along the new growth, but these are typically short-lived and often drop off, especially during drier periods or dormancy. The green stems are the primary photosynthetic organs.
- Spines (Modified Peduncles): Instead of true spines, Euphorbia tortirama may have remnants of old flower stalks (peduncles) that can become somewhat hardened and spine-like over time.
- Small Flowers: Produces small, yellowish cyathia (the characteristic flower structure of Euphorbias) along the stems during its growing season. These flowers are often inconspicuous but add a subtle charm.
- Slow Growth Rate: This Euphorbia is a slow grower, maintaining its intriguing form for an extended period.
-
Drought Tolerant: Adapted to arid conditions and requires minimal watering once established.
- Architectural and Sculptural: Its unique spiraling stems make it a striking and architectural addition to any plant display.
This is an 210mm pot, Picture is representative of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
