Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Firesticks’ is a striking, architectural succulent known for its upright, pencil-thin branches that shift in colour from green to vibrant shades of orange, red, and pink—especially in cooler temperatures or bright sun. Native to Africa and India, this drought-tolerant plant makes a bold statement in xeriscapes, large containers, or minimalist indoor arrangements. Despite its cactus-like appearance, it is a euphorbia and contains a milky sap that should be handled with care.
Main Characteristics:
- Growth Habit: Upright, shrubby form with branching cylindrical stems
- Foliage: Nearly leafless, with coloured stems that provide seasonal interest
- Size: Can grow up to 1–2 metres tall in containers; larger in the ground
- Light: Full sun to bright light for best colour
- Hardiness: USDA zones 10–11; protect from frost
- Toxicity: Milky sap is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes
Care Tips:
- Light: Thrives in full sun; the more sunlight, the brighter the colours. Indoors, place near a very bright window.
- Watering: Water sparingly. Let soil dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
- Soil: Requires very well-draining soil—use a cactus or succulent mix.
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly in spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertiliser.
- Temperature: Keep in a warm location above 10°C (50°F). Not frost tolerant.
- Handling: Wear gloves when pruning or handling, as the sap can cause irritation.
