Looking for an Echeveria with a little more depth and character? Echeveria ‘Metal’ is a striking rosette succulent with thick, fleshy leaves and rich colouring that can range from green and bronze to smoky brown and deep maroon.

The foliage develops a subtle sheen that gives the plant its distinctive appearance. With good light, the darker tones can become more noticeable, creating an attractive contrast between the centre and outer parts of the rosette.

Its larger rosette and strong shape also make it an excellent feature plant for a pot or succulent display.

What Makes ‘Metal’ Different?

The appeal of this Echeveria comes from the combination of colour, leaf texture, and form.

The leaves are broad, fleshy, and slightly pointed. Darker maroon tones can appear around the edges, while the centre may show softer green, bronze, or brown shades. Colour varies naturally with the plant's growing conditions.

A mature plant can develop a rosette of around 25cm wide, although individual plants may remain smaller depending on their age and environment.

Growing Echeveria ‘Metal’ in Australia

Light

Give your plant plenty of bright light to maintain strong growth and attractive colouring.

In cooler parts of Australia, it can handle more direct sun. In very hot areas, especially during summer, some protection from intense afternoon sun can help prevent leaf scorch.

If moving a plant from a shaded position into stronger sunlight, do so gradually.

Watering

This is a drought-tolerant succulent, so frequent watering is unnecessary.

Wait until the potting mix has dried completely before watering again. When watering, soak the soil thoroughly and allow the excess water to drain away.

During cooler or wetter periods, reduce watering further.

Potting Mix

Use a free-draining cactus and succulent mix.

Good drainage is particularly important in areas that experience heavy rainfall or humid weather. Never allow the plant to sit in water.

Temperature

Echeveria ‘Metal’ prefers warm conditions and should be protected from frost.

If you live in a colder part of Australia, growing it in a container makes it easier to move to a sheltered position during cold weather.

Where Can You Grow It?

The strong colouring and larger rosette make this plant a good choice for:

  • Feature pots
  • Succulent bowls
  • Rockeries
  • Patio displays
  • Mixed succulent gardens
  • Sunny windowsills
  • Indoor spaces with strong natural light

Its darker foliage also pairs well with silver, blue-green, or pale succulents.

A Good Choice for Collectors

Echeveria ‘Metal’ is a particularly attractive option if you want something with stronger colour and a more substantial rosette.

It is also relatively easy to maintain once you get the basics right. Plenty of light, excellent drainage, and allowing the soil to dry between watering are the main points to remember.

This plant is supplied in a 130mm diameter nursery pot.
