Dischidia nummularia, commonly known as String of Nickels, is a trailing epiphytic plant native to tropical Asia and Australia. It gets its name from its small, round, coin-shaped leaves that grow along slender, cascading stems. The fleshy leaves are usually green but can develop a silvery hue under bright light. It’s a popular choice for hanging baskets, terrariums, and mounted displays due to its unique texture and trailing habit.

As an epiphyte, it naturally grows on trees and rocks in humid forests, absorbing moisture from the air. It's low-maintenance and especially well-suited to indoor environments with moderate to high humidity.

Main Characteristics:

  • Small, round, fleshy leaves resembling coins

  • Trailing or cascading habit, ideal for hanging displays

  • Typically grows up to 60–100 cm in length

  • Produces tiny, pale yellow to white flowers under the right conditions

  • Epiphytic nature makes it suitable for mounts or loose, airy potting mixes

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the leaves

  • Water: Water when the top layer of the medium is dry. It prefers consistent moisture but should never be waterlogged

  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity. Misting or grouping with other plants can help increase humidity indoors

  • Soil: Use a well-aerated, chunky mix such as orchid bark with perlite or sphagnum moss. It can also be grown mounted on wood or bark

  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions above 15°C. Protect from cold drafts and frost
