Dioscorea elephantipes, commonly known as Elephant’s Foot or Turtleback Plant, is a truly extraordinary caudiciform succulent native to South Africa. Its unique woody, cracked caudex resembles the shell of a tortoise or the rough skin of an elephant’s foot, making it one of the most fascinating collector’s plants. From this sculptural base, slender green vines emerge during the growing season, often decorated with small heart-shaped leaves.
Key Features:
-
Distinctive Caudex – Sculptural, cracked surface resembling an elephant’s foot.
-
Seasonal Vines – Heart-shaped leaves climb and trail beautifully.
-
Long-Lived – Can live for decades with proper care.
-
Collector’s Rarity – A true conversation piece for any succulent enthusiast.
-
Low Maintenance – Stores water in its caudex, requiring little care.
Care Tips:
-
Best grown in bright light or full sun.
-
Use well-draining soil to protect the caudex from rot.
-
Water sparingly—allow the soil to dry between watering, especially during dormancy.
-
Provide support if you wish the vines to climb, or let them trail naturally.

It arrived via express mail from Brisbane, beautifully packaged. Surprised it had some foliage already. After potting up in potting mix with plenty of perlite, it continued to grow vigorously, as if nothing had changed. Very happy on the kitchen sink under the window ledge, where I can keep an eye on it. I'm very happy too.
