Crassula streyi is a unique and lesser-known species in the Crassula family, appreciated for its ornamental foliage rather than its flowers. This South African native features elongated, spoon-shaped leaves with a rich green upper surface and striking burgundy-red undersides. The contrast gives it a dramatic appearance, especially when grown in soft light.
Key Characteristics:
-
Botanical name: Crassula streyi
-
Foliage: Broad, flat green leaves with deep red-purple undersides
-
Growth habit: Upright to slightly sprawling, forming small clusters over time
-
Size: Typically grows 20–30 cm tall
-
Flowers: Small white to pale pink star-shaped flowers in loose clusters (late summer to autumn)
-
Origin: Native to the shady forest margins of South Africa
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, filtered light or partial shade. Direct sun can fade leaf colour or cause stress. Ideal for indoor spaces with indirect light.
-
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring to autumn). Let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
-
Soil: Requires a well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Avoid soggy conditions.
-
Temperature: Protect from frost. Prefers temperatures above 10°C.
-
Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser.
-
Maintenance: Easy to grow and propagate. Trim leggy growth to maintain a compact shape.
