The Pincushion Cactus (Mammillaria johnstonii) is a compact, visually striking cactus native to Mexico, cherished for its dense spines and vibrant blooms. Its spherical form and low-maintenance nature make it an excellent choice for both novice and seasoned plant enthusiasts

 Key Features

  • Compact, Rounded Form: Typically reaching up to 6 inches (15 cm) in height, this cactus boasts a globe-shaped body adorned with soft, white spines, giving it a distinctive pincushion appearance.

  • Vibrant Blooms: In spring, it produces rings of small, funnel-shaped flowers in shades of yellow, orange, or red, adding a burst of color to its spiny exterior. Drought Tolerant: Adapted to arid conditions, it requires minimal watering and thrives in dry environments.

 Light Requirements

Place in bright, direct sunlight for optimal growth. While it can tolerate some light shade, especially during hot summer afternoons, ensure it receives ample light to promote blooming.

Watering Guidelines

  • Growing Season: Water moderately during spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

  • Dormant Period: In winter, reduce watering significantly as the cactus enters dormancy.

 Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, preferably with added grit or coarse sand to enhance drainage. Unglazed clay pots are ideal as they allow excess moisture to evaporate, preventing root rot.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Optimal Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C). During winter dormancy, it prefers cooler temperatures ranging from 45°F to 55°F (7°C to 13°C).

  • Humidity: Prefers low humidity environments. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues

 Flowering and Propagation

  • Blooming: With proper care, expect vibrant flowers in spring. To encourage blooming, provide ample sunlight and withhold watering for several weeks into spring.

  • Propagation: Easily propagated by dividing offsets (pups) from the mother plant or by sowing seeds in a sandy soil mixture during spring.

With its unique appearance and minimal care requirements, the Pincushion Cactus (Mammillaria johnstonii) is a delightful addition to any indoor or outdoor succulent collection. Its charming form and seasonal blooms offer year-round interest for cactus enthusiasts

The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 80mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
