A rare and visually striking cactus, Mammillaria ‘Brain Cactus’ is a crested form of Mammillaria elongata. Its nickname comes from its unusual growth pattern that resembles the folds of a human brain. Instead of growing in a typical cylindrical shape, this cactus develops dense, twisted, and contorted stems, creating a unique sculptural appearance.

Key Characteristics:

  • Botanical name: Mammillaria elongata f. cristata

  • Form: Crested growth with thick, undulating ridges

  • Spines: Soft, fine spines in shades of gold, yellow, or white

  • Size: Compact, typically grows up to 10–15 cm across

  • Origin: Native to central Mexico

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate full sun if gradually acclimated, but protect from harsh midday sun to avoid scorching.

  • Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in cooler months.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Avoid heavy, moisture-retaining soils.

  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions. Protect from frost and temperatures below 5°C.

  • Potting: Choose containers with drainage holes. Repot every 2–3 years to refresh the soil and accommodate growth.

  • Feeding: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring to early autumn).
