Cacti - Espostoa Melanostele

Espostoa melanostele, also known as the Peruvian Old Lady cactus, is a captivating columnar cactus native to the high-altitude regions of Peru. Renowned for its unique appearance, it features a dense covering of woolly white "hair" that resembles a fluffy coat, protecting it from the harsh Andean sun. This white wool contrasts beautifully with the cactus's golden-yellow spines, creating a striking visual display.

As it matures, Espostoa melanostele can grow into a tall, elegant column, reaching several feet in height. Occasionally, it may branch from the base, creating a multi-headed appearance. The cactus is slow-growing, adding to its allure as a collector's item.

In its natural habitat, Espostoa melanostele thrives in dry, sunny environments. It is incredibly drought-tolerant, making it a low-maintenance choice for succulent enthusiasts. In cultivation, it requires well-draining soil and minimal watering, especially during the winter months.

While flowering is rare in cultivation, mature specimens of Espostoa melanostele may produce beautiful white blooms that add to their overall charm. These unique flowers are specially adapted to close during rainstorms and reopen when dry, ensuring successful pollination in their arid environment.
