Bring the resilience of the desert to your space with Alluaudia procera, the easy-care Madagascar Ocotillo. This drought-tolerant succulent features a distinctive, upright growth habit with zigzagging stems and minimal water needs, perfect for low-maintenance landscapes and container gardening.
Growing:
- Alluaudia procera is known for its unique growth habit, with stems that can reach heights of up to 30 feet (9 meters) in their native habitat.
- In cultivation, the tree usually reaches a more manageable height of around 6 to 15 feet (2 to 4.5 meters).
Special Features:
- It prefers full sun exposure and well-draining soil that replicates its arid native habitat.
- During the dry season, Alluaudia procera may lose its leaves, and the stems can take on a grayish-brown color, adding to its drought-tolerant adaptations.
- Alluaudia procera makes a striking addition to xeriscapes, desert-themed gardens, or succulent arrangements.
- I prefer to keep these beauties in pots but they are really interesting plants.
