Crassula perforata 'Variegata', also known as the Variegated String of Buttons, is a striking succulent prized for its unique stacked foliage and attractive variegation. This cultivar adds a colorful twist to the classic String of Buttons plant, making it a popular choice among succulent collectors.
Characteristics
-
Stacked Foliage: The most distinctive feature of this plant is its tightly packed, triangular leaves that grow in opposite pairs and are stacked along the stem. This creates a fascinating geometric pattern, resembling a "string of buttons."
-
Variegation: Unlike the regular Crassula perforata, the variegated variety features creamy white or yellow variegation on its leaves. This variegation adds brightness and contrast, making the plant even more visually appealing. The edges of the leaves can sometimes take on a pinkish hue, especially when exposed to ample sunlight.
-
Growth Habit: It has an upright, branching growth habit when young, but it may become more trailing as it matures. This makes it suitable for both pots and hanging baskets.
-
Size: It is a relatively small succulent, typically reaching a height of 6-18 inches (15-45 cm).
-
Flowers: It produces small, inconspicuous pale yellow flowers in spring, but its foliage is the main attraction.
Care Tips
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the vibrant variegation. It can tolerate some direct morning sun, but protect it from intense afternoon sun to prevent sunburn.
-
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Like most succulents, it is susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Water thoroughly but infrequently, using the "soak and dry" method.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.
-
Temperature: Crassula perforata 'Variegata' prefers warm temperatures but should be protected from frost. It is typically hardy in USDA zones 9-11.
-
Humidity: This succulent prefers dry conditions and does not require high humidity.
-
Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer formulated for succulents. Avoid fertilizing in the winter.
-
Propagation: It can be easily propagated from stem cuttings or offsets. Allow cuttings to dry and callus over before planting them in well-draining soil.
