Hildewintera colademononis – Monkey’s Tail Cactus | Cascading, Fuzzy Trailing Cactus
Hildewintera colademononis, commonly known as the Monkey’s Tail Cactus, is an extraordinary trailing cactus admired for its long, cascading stems and soft, white, hair-like spines. These silky, tail-like stems can extend an impressive 2–3 meters, creating a dramatic waterfall effect when displayed in hanging baskets. Native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia, this epiphytic cactus bursts into vivid red to orange tubular flowers, offering a striking contrast to its fluffy, silvery appearance. Its whimsical form and vigorous growth make it a favourite for collectors and anyone seeking a standout hanging specimen.

Care Tips
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; tolerates gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Avoid harsh midday sun, which may scorch the fine hairs.
Watering: Water deeply during the growing season (spring to autumn), allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Keep nearly dry in winter.
Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix; adding extra perlite or pumice helps prevent excess moisture retention.
Temperature: Warmth-loving—protect from frost. Ideal temperature range: 15–30°C.
Humidity: Handles dry air well but benefits from occasional misting in low-humidity indoor environments.
Fertilizing: Feed monthly during active growth with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
Propagation: Very easy to propagate from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous before planting.
