Hildewintera colademononis, also known as Monkey’s Tail Cactus, is a unique and eye-catching trailing cactus known for its long, cascading stems covered in soft, white, hair-like spines. Native to Bolivia, this epiphytic cactus produces bright green stems that can grow over a metre in length, resembling a monkey’s tail—hence its name. In spring or summer, it may produce stunning large red to magenta flowers, making it both a conversation piece and a collector’s treasure.

Key Characteristics:

  • Stems: Long, cylindrical, trailing stems densely covered with silky white hairs

  • Flowers: Bright red to magenta, tubular flowers that bloom on mature plants

  • Growth Habit: Cascading/trailing, ideal for hanging baskets

  • Size: Stems can grow over 1 metre in length with age

  • Use: Excellent for hanging planters, succulent walls, or greenhouse displays

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered sun. Can tolerate some direct sun, but avoid harsh afternoon exposure.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly when soil is dry. Reduce watering during winter dormancy. Avoid water sitting at the base of stems.

  • Soil: Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Add perlite or pumice for extra aeration.

  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions. Minimum temperature: 5°C. Protect from frost.

  • Humidity: Prefers dry air; does not require high humidity.

  • Fertilizer: Feed during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month.

  • Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous before planting.

Special Features:

  • Soft, hairy stems that resemble a monkey’s tail

  • Showy, bright flowers on mature plants

  • Excellent trailing cactus for hanging displays

  • Drought-tolerant and low maintenance

  • A rare and collectible species for cactus enthusiasts
