Aloe Vera is one of the most popular and useful succulents, loved for its fleshy green leaves, easy-care nature, and fresh architectural look. It is a great choice for Australian homes and gardens, whether grown on a sunny windowsill, kitchen bench, patio, balcony, or in a warm outdoor succulent bed.

This hardy succulent forms a neat rosette of thick, upright leaves that store water, helping the plant handle dry conditions once established. Aloe Vera is also well known for the clear gel inside its leaves, which has traditionally been used for soothing the skin.

With its clean shape and low-maintenance growth habit, Aloe Vera suits both beginners and experienced plant collectors. It works well as a feature plant in a pot, as part of a mixed succulent arrangement, or in dry garden displays.

Care Tips

Light

Place Aloe Vera in a bright position with plenty of indirect light or gentle direct sun. Outdoors, it can handle sunny conditions, but protect it from harsh afternoon sun during very hot weather, especially when newly planted.

Watering

Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between watering. Avoid overwatering, as Aloe Vera is prone to root rot if left sitting in wet soil.

Soil

Use a free-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Good drainage is essential for healthy root growth.

Temperature

Aloe Vera prefers warm, dry conditions. Protect from frost, prolonged cold, and heavy rain. In cooler areas, it is best grown in a pot so it can be moved to a protected spot when needed.

Potting and Planting

Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Aloe Vera also grows well in sandy, free-draining garden soil in suitable warm climates. It can be combined with other succulents in pots, rock gardens, and low-water garden displays.

Propagation

Aloe Vera can produce offsets, also known as pups, around the base of the plant. These can be separated and replanted once they are large enough, making it easy to grow your collection over time.

Good to Know

Aloe Vera is valued for both its appearance and practical uses, but it should not be eaten unless you are certain it is safe and suitable for that purpose. Keep out of reach of pets and children, as the plant may cause irritation or stomach upset if chewed.

This Aloe Vera plant is grown in a red 190mm diameter nursery pot. The first image is for display purposes only. The images provide a representative idea of the plant you will receive, but size, shape, and colour may vary slightly, as no two succulents are exactly the same.
